Funding Digital Equity at Skyview Middle School

Funding Digital Equity at Skyview Middle School As educational leaders, the challenge is no longer simply providing devices, but ensuring that technology meaningfully improves teaching, learning, and equity. At Skyview Middle School, a 1:1 Chromebook model is already in place, yet devices remain school-bound and instructional use varies widely. This reflects a broader national shift: digital inequity is now defined by instructional quality, family capacity, and system coherence rather than access alone (Zhao et al., 2023; Selwyn, 2016). One important consideration for our community is broadband access. Although Colorado Springs is not usually considered a high-need area for internet access, some families still experience challenges with reliable connectivity at home. Expanding broadband access nationwide through initiatives like K–12 Bridge to Broadband can help ensure all students can engage in learning beyond the school day (Education Superhighway, 2021). Additionally, programs...

Week 4: Building Staff Capacity to Strengthen Student Learning Through Technology

Building Staff Capacity to Strengthen Student Learning Through Technology As we begin implementing a Technology Integration Plan at Skyview Middle School, one thing is clear from both our needs assessment and the research. Access is not the issue. Capacity is. While students have consistent access to devices, their learning experiences vary depending on how technology is used in the classroom (Kopcha et al., 2020). Because of this, the Staff component of the STARSS-LS Framework plays a key role in driving meaningful change (Ruggiero & Mong, 2015). To address this, professional learning should be designed as a continuous, connected process instead of a set of one-time training sessions. Research consistently shows that sustained, job-embedded professional development has a greater impact on teacher practice than one-time workshops (Amemasor et al., 2025; Shi et al., 2025). At Skyview, this means building a cycle that includes collaborative planning, coaching, implementation, a...

Week 3: Building a Shared Vision for Digital Equity and Meaningful Technology Use

Building a Shared Vision for Digital Equity and Meaningful Technology Use At Skyview Middle School, access to technology is not the primary challenge. Students have consistent access to devices during the school day, and the district has a strong infrastructure in place. However, the needs assessment shows that student experiences with technology vary significantly depending on the classroom and the level of support available at home. This reinforces an important idea. Digital equity is not just about access. It is about how technology is used to support learning and whether all students have the opportunity to engage in meaningful ways. Crompton (2023) identifies several best practices that support student learning when using technology. Two that stand out are designing authentic learning experiences and creating opportunities for collaboration. At Skyview, technology is used regularly, but much of that use centers on research, practice, and assessment. These uses are important, but...
